Anxiety

Symptoms- Anxiety can present as physical, emotional, or cognitive manifestations and can impact an individual in a variety of ways. Physical symptoms often include muscle tension, fidgeting, perspiration, nausea, and elevated heart rate. Feelings of uneasiness, apprehension, and fatigue are often reported as emotional symptoms. Sleep disturbance, inability to concentrate, “catastrophizing” i.e. (negative thinking) and rumination are often reported as cognitive symptoms.

Impact- While every individual experiences anxiety at times, elevated levels of anxiety left untreated can lead to anxiety disorders that have the potential to significantly impact a person’s quality of life and relationships. Anxiety may lead to unreasonable worry, OCD, as well as avoidance of everyday or certain situations. It often increases negative thinking, defeatist or pessimistic attitudes, and in some cases can cause health issues including disordered eating, headaches, and hypertension; all of which can result in social isolation and depression. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for anxiety to run co-morbid with depression.
