Now known as the most common manifestation in the realm of disordered eating, binge eating disorder (BED) is only recently gaining the attention it deserves. BED is characterized by episodes of compulsive overeating in which one feels powerless to stop. Binge tendencies often emerge after periods of restrictive dieting. Shame, depression, and anxiety function in a vicious cycle in BED, both leading to its development and then exacerbating and reinforcing this condition. Counseling is a safe place to receive support and understanding for BED and to begin to take the steps that will loosen its hold over one’s daily life.
