We all play a unique role in our family’s dynamics: perhaps you have felt the pressures of perfection that first-born children often encounter; or maybe you are stuck as “the baby of the family”; maybe you can’t help noticing that your husband or wife always sides with one child over another. Patterns become deeply-entrenched—so much so that after a time, we cannot always see them. Examining the patterns of conflict and dysfunction in one’s immediate family is the first step in reclaiming harmony with and even enjoyment of each other. Counseling that addresses family relationship issues may involve multiple members of a family, or it may be something that one undertakes as a solo step towards better emotional health. Either way, exploring family dynamics allows us to more fully understand ourselves and those we love most.
